Redlands Community Hospital Receives Grant from Komen Inland Empire Affiliate for Health Imaging Center’s Breast Cancer Project

The Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a ,652 grant to the Redlands Community Hospital Women’s Health Imaging Center to provide assistance to uninsured and underinsured women with abnormal mammograms under the age 40.

The grant from Komen for the Cure® will support the “Breast Cancer Project for the Redlands Community Hospital Women’s Health Imaging Center”, an initiative to raise awareness for women’s breast health issues and provide diagnostic services including breast ultrasounds, biopsies and MRIs.  The grant will focus on women under the age of 40 who are uninsured or are underinsured.  The imaging center will be reaching out to the community, working with local medical groups to identify women who fit the criteria of the grant.  The women who qualify will receive the services without cost.

“The Komen for the Cure grant is a generous gift to us that will allow us to open our doors to more women in our community,” said Zachary Tucker, president of the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation.  “We hope that the women benefitting from this grant will get the diagnostic tests they need to better understand their condition so that they can get into a proper treatment plan.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Inland Empire Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

“One of our priorities is to find patients that will benefit from this grant and then educate them about being proactive about their health,” said Sheila Arnold, women’s health imaging manger. “This grant is very important for the women in our community because we want them to know women under the age of 40 are also at risk for breast cancer- especially those with a family history.  For some women, breast health services that were once denied to them due to lack of insurance or being underinsured, will now be available to them thanks to this grant.”

”At the Komen Inland Empire Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered that there was a need for innovative programs that reduce breast cancer mortality, especially among those who are disproportionately affected by this disease. Programs aimed at increasing breast health knowledge and awareness, clinical trials education, participation, and enrollment, and providing patient navigation resources, are our current priority areas,” said Sarah Bryant, Mission Programs Manager. “We are confident that through the Redlands Community Hospital’s program, women in our community will have access to the services they need.”

If you think you may qualify, or someone you know may qualify, for this program, please contact Sheila Arnold, Manager of the RCH Women’s Health Imaging Center at (909) 793-4399 for additional information.
